UGC appetite is stronger than ever and monetization capabilities are expanding for the creators behind this in-demand content type.

Instagram is testing out a new paid subscription feature to help creators earn money for their content and give their followers access to exclusive content.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the Instagram Subscriptions test on Facebook, stating, “Launching a test of subscriptions on Instagram in the U.S. today. This will help Creators earn more by offering benefits to their most engaged followers like access to exclusive Lives and Stories. I’m excited to keep building tools for Creators to make a living doing creative work and to put these tools in more Creators’ hands soon.”

So what does this mean?

For content creators, this new feature opens up their earning potential and grants them the ability to earn a monthly income based on how much they charge for a subscription, which can be as low as 99 cents/month or as high as $99.99.

For followers, subscriptions will offer exclusive content from their favorite content creators such as subscriber-only lives, stories, and badges. Badges will appear next to a subscriber’s handle via DMs or comments from the creator’s end, making it easier to get noticed by your favorite influencer or celeb.

The subscription feature is slowly rolling out, so creators who don’t see the feature just yet will need to wait for the test to expand. Only time will tell if IG subscriptions are around for the long run, but It’ll be interesting to see if it sticks and if so, how it will impact increasingly customized social shopping experiences.
