Facebook Redefines Vanity URLs

In a little under 12 hours, Facebook will begin allowing users to register for vanity URLs. That’s right, Facebook has announced that at 12:01 am EST, users will be able to customize their domain names. Instead of the traditional series of random numbers, a Facebook URL may now read www.facebook.com/directagents. It may appear to be another simple upgrade to the social networking site. But users should not underestimate the potential impacts.
The bearing of distributing and using vanity URLs is two-fold. Maintaining customized Facebook URLs may be profitable, and there are countless users anxiously awaiting these possibilities. First of all, it’s simpler. Clients and customers are very quickly going to forget a string of numbers, but a vanity URL is much easier to remember and can even be put on business cards. Additionally, customized domain names donate a greater sense of legitimacy and may be more convincing to viewers. Furthermore, vanity URLs could play into search engines like Google and Yahoo, allowing producers and advertisers to generate traffic to their Facebook pages by concentrating on SEO strategies.
But vanity URLs shouldn’t be too hyped, at least not yet. Obviously there will be a scramble for coveted URLs. Users will have to think carefully about what they opt for because Facebook has already made it clear that “once it’s been selected, you won’t be able to change or transfer it.” Moreover, brand names and trademarks are bound to be hot commodities, and experts are warning that a wave of lawsuits will most likely ensue as people and companies scramble to protect their names. Facebook has taken some precautions by asking brand name holders to email them in advance to protect their marks. But there is only so much that Facebook can do and legal battles are bound to get ugly.
If you want to register your vanity Facebook URL, don’t wait. Usernames will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13 at www.facebook.com/username/. And they will go fast!
