Facebook: Connect Globally, Advertise Locally

There is no question about it, local advertising dominates Facebook, the popular global online social networking platform. Borrell Associates, a research firm specializing in advertising reports that of the impressive $310 million in ad revenue Facebook forecasts for 2009, 75% will come from local advertising. That’s $232.5 million in profits from small location-specific advertising campaigns, many of which are fun by small businesses.

This isn’t entirely happenstance. As Facebook has continued to grow at astonishing rates, leaving other social networks in the dust, it has consciously made attempts to tweak and improve its advertising interfaces. According to Fastcompany.com, Facebook has even gone so far as to begin testing “pop-up video ads.” This is all very good news for Facebook, which could see even larger earnings in the future. If the U.S. local ad market is currently valued at 150 billion, Facebook may have hit the goldmine in online advertising.
